AP Exam Preparation

What are the AP Exams? The Advanced Placement or AP Exams are given to high school students enrolled in AP classes. Students enrolled in these classes have the option to take the AP Exams for the classes they are enrolled in.  Students who do well on these exams will earn scores that counts as college credit.  The exams are scored out of five. Most universities will accept a score of three or higher to count AP credits.  Some universities with a more rigorous curriculum require a score of four or higher to count AP credits. Earning AP credits has many benefits. Earning these college credits in advance can save students thousands of dollars in tuition fees. Having passed one or more of these exams is a plus on any college application. Finally passing these exams will allow students to skip general or introductory courses when they arrive at college. General Information The exams typically consist of a multiple choice section and a free response section. The combined scores of these two sections make up the total score (1-5) for the exam. There is no penalty for guessing on the multiple choice section of an AP exam, so plan on answering every question on the multiple choice portion of your exam. The free response sections consist of questions that must be answered in the form of an essay or a solution to a problem with drawings. These answers are done with pen in the free response exam booklet. A link to download a PDF of a free AP practice exam can be found below each exam description listed below. After printing off the exam, it’s important to take it in the most realistic setting possible. So make sure that you block off at least 3 hours to take these practice tests. When taking each section stick to the time limit and use only what you can bring to the actual AP exam (i.e. a pencil, a calculator and the equation sheets provided to you on the exam).  After taking the exam mark the answers that you got correct in the multiple choice section(s). Do your best to objectively score each free response question based on the grading rubric given. Then, using the scoring formula at the bottom of each answer key, score each section. Next you’ll want to set a realistic goal to improve these scores. Typically students can improve their overall AP scores between the times that they take the practice exam and the actual exam.  However, this depends upon a few key factors: 1) How much time and effort the student puts into studying for the exam Obviously students will do better on the AP exam if they prepare for it diligently over a longer period of time. Hiring a knowledgeable tutor will help students stay focused on their goals in the weeks preceding the exam.  Vadnais Heights Tutoring Services provides students with guidance so that they can stay on track while preparing for these exams.  I also have the knowledge of the individual tests to make sure that students are studying for their exams correctly. 2) Whether or not the student is using successful test taking strategies to answer the questions These exams are not all together straight forward.  They can be very stressful, which can limit a student’s performance.  That is why it is important for each student to know the exam inside and out and a have time proven strategy to be successful on their exam.  Vadnais Heights Tutoring Services provides students with the knowledge and strategies they need to be successful when taking these exams. 3) The amount of practice the student gets in taking full length, proctored AP exams The AP exams can be very stressful for students for a variety of reasons.  The timed format of the exam can cause students to under preform.  The key to overcoming this is to practice for the stress.  Make your practice exam conditions as realistic as possible.  Vadnais Heights Tutoring Services can help students do these simulations in their own home.  I can provide tips to make your practice exam setting more realistic. I can proctor the exam over the internet to simulate a more realistic test setting.  I can provide students with more free practice exams like the ones seen below if they are having trouble finding them.
